Abaya FAQs

Everything you might want to know before choosing your next piece.

What is an abaya?

An abaya is a long, loose outer garment worn over everyday clothing. It falls from the shoulders to the ankles and is designed to drape rather than cling, offering full coverage while remaining comfortable to move in. Styles range from plain and minimal to richly embroidered, and modern cuts include open-front, closed, kimono, and belted designs.

What makes Istanbul Styles different from other abaya shops?

We're based in Istanbul, at the centre of Turkish modest fashion manufacturing, and we work directly with the workshops that produce our pieces. That means no layers of middlemen between the atelier and you.

We also hold stock in the United States and Canada, so most orders reach North American customers in days rather than weeks — something few Turkish labels can offer.

What fabrics do you use?

Most of our abayas are made from lightweight woven polyester and crepe blends chosen for how they drape. These fabrics hold their shape, resist creasing through a long day, and stay breathable in warmer weather.

Our activewear and tracksuits use a heavier scuba-style knit for structure and warmth. The exact fabric for each piece is listed in its product description.

Do your abayas come in different colours?

Yes. Alongside classic black, many of our designs are available in navy, beige, brown, olive, grey, and seasonal shades. Available colours are shown as selectable options on each product page, and each one has its own photographs so you can see the true shade before ordering.

How do I choose the right size?

Please don't assume your usual letter size. Our pieces come from different ateliers, and a medium in one design can measure differently from a medium in another — so always check the size chart on the specific product page.

Every product page includes a Find Your Perfect Fit tool. Enter your height, weight, and bust measurement and it recommends a size for that exact piece, based on its own measurements rather than a general guide.

If you're between sizes or unsure, email us before ordering — we'd much rather help you get it right the first time.

Can non-Muslims wear an abaya?

Absolutely. While the abaya has deep roots in Muslim dress, plenty of women choose one simply because they prefer modest, comfortable clothing — for travel, for work, for visiting places of worship, or because they love the silhouette. Everyone is welcome here.

What occasions are abayas suitable for?

All of them, depending on the design. A plain crepe abaya works for school runs, errands, and the office. Embroidered and embellished pieces are made for Eid, weddings, and evening gatherings. Our open-front and kimono styles sit comfortably in between, layering easily over what you already own.

How should I care for my abaya?

Hand wash in cold water and hang to dry. Avoid bleach, avoid the tumble dryer, and don't dry clean unless the care label says otherwise.

For embroidered or rhinestone-trimmed pieces, turn the garment inside out before washing and iron on low heat, avoiding the detailing directly. Treated well, a good abaya lasts for years.

Are abayas seasonal?

The garment itself is year-round; the fabric is what changes. Lightweight crepe and chiffon suit spring and summer, while heavier woven blends and our scuba knits carry you through autumn and winter. Because an abaya layers over what you're already wearing, it adapts more easily across seasons than most single garments.

What's the difference between an abaya, a jilbab, and a kaftan?

An abaya is a loose full-length outer garment worn over clothing, usually open or closed at the front.

A jilbab typically refers to a longer, fuller garment that may include an attached head covering, offering more complete coverage.

A kaftan is a wide, flowing dress worn on its own rather than as an outer layer, often shorter and more decorative.

The terms shift between regions, so we describe the actual cut and length on every product page rather than relying on the label alone.

Where do you ship from, and how long does delivery take?

We ship from Istanbul as well as our warehouses in the United States and Canada. Orders fulfilled locally in North America typically arrive within a few business days; pieces shipped from Türkiye take longer. Estimated delivery times are shown at checkout before you pay.

Can I return an item if it doesn't fit?

We're not able to accept returns or exchanges for change of mind, including sizing — which is exactly why we built the size advisor and publish full measurements on every product page.

If your order arrives faulty, damaged, or isn't what you ordered, contact us within 14 days of delivery and we'll make it right at no cost to you. Full details are in our returns policy.
